Description
Hands down our favorite of all the English ivies, and one of only three varieties we actually have growing in our own gardens, Wilson Ivy is the most ornamentally attractive and also the slowest growing, which makes it much easier to manage as a groundcover in landscape borders, home foundation plantings, under large shade trees, or in containers. It is equally as hardy growing indoors or outdoors, and we’ve found it thrives in sun or shade, though we think ivies look more at home in a shady to partially shaded environment. Its highly ornamental deep green leaves, which are similar in appearance to Needlepoint Ivy, are much smaller than those of standard English Ivy, forming an attractive evergreen carpet that provides a distinguished, unique texture in the landscape. As with other ivies (Hedera), it can use aerial roots to attach to and climb walls if allowed, essentially creating an attractive live wall. However, as mentioned this one is easy to manage and keep contained.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 inches tall and trailing to form a dense carpet of evergreen foliage, Wilson Ivy is ideal for use as a groundcover in landscape borders, home foundation plantings, under large shade trees, or as a soil stabilizer on embankments. Its vines will also cling to and climb brick, stone, wooden and other walls with porous surfaces to create an attractive “live wall.” Also effective spilling over walls. Very nice as a soil cover and spiller plant in pots, planters, hanging baskets and other containers that can be situated on patios, decks, porches or even indoors as a houseplant.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches for mass plantings

Growing Preferences
Wilson Ivy is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility. In our gardens, we’ve found that it will thrive in sun or full shade, though we think it looks more at home in a partially shaded to shady environment. We’ve had it growing in our gardens for over 30 years and it has taken everything mother nature has thrown at it; extreme drought to periods of excessive rainfall, over 105 degree temperatures and cold to 3F. Deer and rabbits don’t touch it and we’ve never seen a problem with disease or insects. It also performs well indoors as a houseplant. About the only thing it might not tolerate is standing water for an extended period of time.
Caution: Ivy plants can be invasive so make sure to control their spread when growing near woodland areas.
