Description
Developed by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, ‘White Lights’ is the most cold hardy Azalea we offer. The plant and its flower buds can handle temperatures as low as -50F! Not only is it exceptionally hardy, in spring it wows with abundant clusters of soft pink buds that open to very pretty, fragrant, star-shaped, gleaming white flowers delicately touched with a yellow blotch. A must have for northern azalea enthusiasts but will also handle the heat as far south as USDA Zone 8b.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the White Lights Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in woodland borders or other areas of the landscape that provide moist but well-drained soils rich in organic matter. A fine selection for fragrance gardens, Azalea gardens, woodland gardens, white theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
White Lights Azalea is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average to high fertility and part shade. It prefers an acid soil rich in organic matter. In cooler northern climates it will tolerate more sun but prefers some shade during the afternoon hours in warmer climates. Deciduous azaleas are very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is spoiling the natural form of the plant.
