Description
A wonderful fern ideal for adding a bright splash of color and soft texture to the shade garden, Silver Lace Fern is an easy to grow moderate to fast growing perennial that features beautifully textured lacy, variegated white and green foliage. If you are looking for a plant that tolerates moist to wet soil conditions in shade, Silver Lace Fern is a fine choice. Can also be grown as an indoor houseplant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Silver Lace Fern is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or in stunning mass plantings to add color and texture to shady and moist areas. It’s also great for pots, planters, hanging baskets and other containers that can be situated outdoors or indoors. A fine addition to woodland gardens, Asian gardens, bog gardens, cut foliage gardens, fern gardens, rock gardens, and around the garden pond and other water features.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a, where this fern is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Silver Lace Fern is easy to grow when planted right, and in the right spot. It adapts to most soil types, preferring a moist soil of average fertility and shade to mostly shade. All day dappled or filtered sun is okay, however, direct sun will cause damage to the leaves. This said, some early morning sun will be tolerated. If grown in dry soil make sure to provide ample water during dry periods or drought.

(Updated two years later) These four ferns are the best specimens in my garden. They look so unusual, everyone notices them despite other several very showy shrubs and plants I have. Turns out this fern grows VERY bushy in just one season. I cut it back to the roots in March before it sprouts new shoots, and by May it’s a 2ftx2ft ball of fern, which looks like a snow-covered fir tree branches. So beautiful!
(Old review) I ordered 4 of these ferns for my shady garden. They arrived well packaged, but I was quite disappointed by their appearance. The taller spikes and the end of the leaves were all brown and dry. The representative from WB (who was very fast to respond) clarified that this could be due to the frost damage they (and we) recently experienced, and that the plant should be growing new shoots very soon. I trimmed all the damaged leaves, and the plants started looking much more attractive. Two weeks later all of the plants but one are doing great. One is a bit more yellow than others, not sure why. We’ll see. The leaves of this fern look so surreal, at first you get confused whether they are spiky or smooth…. Many people on the streets ask me about this fern “What is it?” “Astilbe, but probably not…” I have to repeat myself several times that this is “a fern”, the look of this fern just doesn’t click with our normal vision of a fern. I love it!————————————One of my favorites! I hope they all do well. We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beautiful fern. Came larger than I expected, very well packaged and quick. It was very healthy looking with new growth uncurling. I planted it in the garden, under the trees — a shady spot with very little sun but bright ambient light. We had an unexpected light freeze about a week after I planted it and I thought it would have affected it, but it seems to be o.k., still growing new fronds. Here, South East Texas, not any fern will grow, or you have to have it in an ideal location. I don’t have that. The only shade my yard has in under trees and I only have a few trees. But I love ferns and I try them. I have had several different ferns survive for three years now. They get pretty bad looking in the summer heat but in fall, when the weather starts to cool, they get a burst of growth and last through the fall and into early winter, since we have mild winters here. I hope this fern will survive and become part of my collection. Wilson Bros has not disappointed me yet. If this fern survives the first year, I will get more. Thank you Wilson Bros.———————-WBG Reply: Hi Anna, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Silver Lace Fern.
