Description
If you’re looking for a very tough but beautiful and regal long-lived perennial fern to light up shady areas in your landscape, look no further than the Japanese Painted Fern. We have specimens in our gardens that are two decades old and still thriving. ‘Regal Red’ is a selection featuring striking fronds with violet-red ribs that are contrasted by bright silvery-white delicate fronds throughout the season, giving this magnificent fern an overall tapestry effect. The fronds are an outstanding addition to cut flower arrangements, providing lasting color and soft texture. Also great for use in containers that can be kept outdoors or as an indoor houseplant. For its outstanding beauty and performance in the garden it was named Perennial Plant of the Year.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, the beautiful Regal Red Japanese Painted Fern is ideal for use as an accent or in small grouping in small garden spaces, and large groupings or absolutely stunning mass plantings in larger landscape borders. Very nice as a solo or combined with other shade-loving plants in combination container gardens. Combines nicely with blue hosta lilies and burgundy to purple leaved Heuchera (Coral Bells). A fine addition to woodland gardens, fern gardens, shade gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens and around garden ponds.
Growing Preferences
The Japanese Painted Fern is easy to grow and low maintenance. It is hardy nearly everywhere in the United States, except for the desert areas and northern areas above Zone 3. Like many other perennial ferns, it prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. That said, morning sun and evening sun is fine.

I live in hardiness zone 8B south (Louisiana) and have purchased a lot of plant material from Wilson Bros, with most of it arriving in exceptional condition and exceeding my expectations. I purchased two 1 gallon regal red japanese painted ferns on 9/9/23, they were shipped 9/13 and arrived on 9/15. One of the plants had come loose in the shipping box, with a big dent in the side of the plastic container and both plants had 3-4 fronds that were damaged and had to be pruned off upon unboxing. Other than that, the plants looked healthy and met my expectations for a 1 gallon size plant. The coloring was a more evenly dispersed green w/o the expected painting; however, as new growth has started to emerge, the coloring becomes more prominent. I did not get them planted until 10/7 but they were still thriving at the time they were planted and are still doing well.———————————-So glad they are okay.
