Description
With a dense and low spreading habit, the October Magic Carpet Camellia lends itself well for mass or group plantings, home foundation plantings, or an underplanting for medium size trees such as dogwoods, redbuds and upright, tall Japanese maples. Unique, frilly double pink flowers are produced in abundance during fall and stand out beautifully against the glossy dark green foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With a low spreading habit to about 3 feet tall and 5 or more feet wide, October Magic Carpet Camellia is highly useful in mass or group plantings or to create a colorful underplanting for medium size trees such as dogwoods, redbuds and upright, tall Japanese maples. Also ideal for use on partially shaded embankments to assist in erosion control and to beautify the space. Can be used for espalier: trained to grow flat against a open wall and in containers, planters and pots.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
