Description
Always wanted a fig tree but haven’t had the space?…meet Little Ruby, a dwarf that is the very best fig for smaller gardens and containers as small as a 7 gallon pot. Excellent for growing as a houseplant indoors, in the greenhouse or sunroom, and on patios, porches, decks. Little Ruby is so much smaller the bonsai enthusiasts are working their art with it. At 4 to 6 feet tall and wide in the garden and maybe half that size in containers, this diminutive shrub produces loads of bite-sized, super-sweet, red-fleshed figs that are perfect fresh or dried as a nutritious snack for kids, and grown-up kids too. These figs have a closed eye when ripe, which helps to resist splitting and retains sweetness. In warmer zones, a first crop will come around late July and again in mid-September. As with the larger cousins, Little Ruby sports large, deeply lobed leaves that provide outstanding texture and a tropical effect in the garden.
NOTE: As with all of our other plants and trees, all of our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to only 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide in the ground, and maybe half that size in containers, Little Ruby Fig is a perfect fit for smaller spaces and can even be grown as a houseplant in a well-lit environment. Perfect in container as small as a 7 gallon pot that can be situated on sunny patios, porches, decks and around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to the fruit garden, tropical garden and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
Fig bushes will grow reasonably well in most soil types. They produce the best fruit in moderately to slightly acidic, moist but well-drained fertile soil that is rich in organic matter. In soil with low fertility it’ll be worth your time to mix in some organic compost to the native soil. They like the soil to hold a good supply of water, especially when the fruits are developing in summer, but not so much water that the soil stays constantly soggy or wet, which can be problematic. The best and most fruits will are produced when trees are growing in full sun. However, fig trees that receive a little shade during the hottest part of summer days will still produce good crops.
NOTE: In USDA Zone 6 and 7 it would be a good idea to provide some winter protection for potted trees as their roots will be more exposed to the colder air temperatures. A heavy layer of mulch will help protect the roots during winter. Planting on the east side of a home, or where it will be sheltered from north and western winds, will also provide long term protection during the cool season. If temperatures drop below 20 degrees we’d suggest moving potted figs to an unheated interior space such as a garage or shed until the temperatures have risen to above freezing.

My Little Miss Figgy came carefully well-packed and very healthy, and had many figs still on the branches! I have no experience with fruit figs and it was in dormancy (being late November) so i had lots of questions, which were all carefully answered by Jillian from customer service. Thank you so much!
