Description
LeAnn Cleyera is a fast-growing, large shrub or small tree that features attractive, glossy evergreen foliage. The colorful new growth produced throughout the season emerges in shades of burgundy, orange and red. Cleyera is an excellent substitute for the disease-prone Red Tip Photinia.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, LeAnn Cleyera is ideal for use as an accent, to frame corners, or to fill large spaces between windows or against open walls in home foundation plantings It also serves as a very attractive evergreen hedge or background in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. Remove lower branches and you have a very attractive small tree useful as a focal point specimen in sunny to partly shaded areas. A fine addition to tropical look gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Cleyera variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Japanese Cleyera are easy to grow in a range of soils and full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil however are exceptionally tolerant of dry soil conditions when established. They do not require pruning, however can be pruned to a formal shape or to form a small tree.

Hello Wilson Brothers!
I recently ordered two 3 gallon shrubs from you – one photinia, and one fetterbush. Both arrived in such beautiful shape, I couldn’t believe they’d just come out of a dark cardboard box! The leaves were shiny (and all there) and the fetterbush even had little flowers on it! What gorgeous plants… I am beyond thrilled with these plants, and will keep you in mind for future orders – and I will tell all my gardening friends about you, too!
Thanks so much for doing a fabulous job – my garden is going to be AWESOME this year!
Cheers.———————————–We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks a bunch for the kind words and awesome review! Beth | WBG 🙂
