Description
Released by the United States Arboretum in 1966 and winner of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal Plant award, ‘Mohawk’ Viburnum has stood the test of time for very good reasons. Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, Viburnum x burkwoodi ‘Mohaw’ distinguishes itself from Viburnum x burkwoodi in that it produces cherry-red buds that open to the most fragrant flowers of any Viburnum in our gardens, is more compact, and has more colorful fall foliage. The densely-branched shrub or small tree sports handsome, dark green evergreen leaves in USDA Zones 7 and 8 and deciduous further north. All grown up, Burkwood can reach 8 to 10 feet tall and wide which makes it a fine choice for an accent, hedge or screen. Lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree. A virtual pest and disease free low maintenance beauty that is a fine addition to any landscape where it will grow. (USDA Zones 4-8)
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and equally as wide, the Mowhawk Viburnum is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. As this Viburnum grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree useful as a focal point specimen in landscape borders or home foundation plantings. Plant one near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor areas where the fragrance and beautiful flowers can be enjoyed from up close. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Mohawk Viburnum is very easy to grow in moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering. It prefers a loamy soil so amend heavy clay or poor soils with compost, bagged top soil or other organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Established plants have good drought tolerance. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. Responds well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.

My (2) three gallon Korean Spice viburnum arrived in great shape. Only one small branch was bent to the point of breaking. They were planted 3 days later and have acclimated well to their new home, even to the point of showing off with a few “oh so fragrant” blooms.——————————————————Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I have ordered many different trees and shrubs from Wilson Bros. Nursery, but this was the plant that inspired my first order. Mohawk viburnum is very difficult to find at any nursery, especially in a landscape size like this. (3 gallon) My plants arrived looking like they never were boxed or shipped by mail at all. They were very securely fastened to the strong cardboard box and did not move at all during shipment. No leaves or branches were broken…NONE. The shrub was very well branched and full and even had many flower buds already formed for next spring’s blossoms. The root system was strong and dense and entirely filled the pot.. Since I cannot personally inspect any plant I purchase through mail order, I have to trust the nursery to send me a good healthy specimen. The plants I received from Wilson Bros. are plants I would have chosen myself if possible. I have nothing but praise and satisfaction for them.———————————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I am a landscaper by trade and was very skeptical buying shrubs from a mailorder company. In the past I’ve received dried stock, broken main leaders, and small plants. I also never write reviews. This company, however, was outstanding! I received very well packaged, large, healthy shrubs. I will absolutely order again and have already told a few friends…two of whom have ordered already and were also very happy with their purchases. All I can say is thank you so much!———————————–Wow!
