With some of the most striking black foliage of any perennial, Dwarf Black Mondo Grass, Ophiopogon japonicus nigrescens ‘Nana’, is a rare lower growing cultivar that spreads very slowly to form an attractive carpet of foliage to 4 to 6 inches tall. The leaves are a deep black with a glauca shine underneath. An easy-to-grow plant ideal for use as a small-space groundcover or in container or fairy gardens.

Growing 4 to 6 inches tall and 6 to 12 inches or more wide, Dwarf Black Mondo Grass is ideal for use as a small-space groundcover, low border, or accent in container and fairy gardens. Perfect for use as an underplanting for small trees such as Japanese maples or nestled between boulders around the garden pond in in the rock garden. A fine addition to black theme gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens and fairy gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 inches apart for quicker fill as groundcover; 8 to 12 inches apart if you have patience

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Mondo Grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Dwarf Black Mondo Grass is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and sun to part shade. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic.
