Description

An improved version of an old-fashioned favorite, Bordeaux Lily of the Valley features bell-shaped, pure white fragrant flowers that are held on thin stems above the foliage rather than nestled between the leaves as they are with the species. The flowers of Bordeaux appear in spring over a period of several weeks and are so pleasantly fragrant that they are used in making perfumes. Following the flowers are showy bright orange-red berries. The tulip-like but more rounded upright leaves are darker green and the plant spreads to form a small colony to around 18 inches wide or more in the garden. Also excellent as a centerpiece or accent in containers of 12 inches or more in diameter.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 12 inches tall and gradually spreading by underground roots to form an 18 inch or more wide colony, Bordeaux Lily Of The Valley is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or in groupings or as a naturalizing groundcover under trees or in woodland settings. Also very nice as a centerpiece or accent in container gardens surrounded by low and spreading perennial or annual plants. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, Zen gardens, Asian gardens, cutting gardens and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

Lily of the Valley is very easy to grow in a wide range of soil conditions including dry and clay soils. That said, it much prefers and will spread more vigorously in a consistently moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Will grow in full sun in cooler climates however we think this one retains it’s darkest foliage color and performs best with some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours.
