Description
Not only beautiful, super-hardy and long-lived, the Autumn Fern is evergreen! We have specimens in our gardens that are decades old and still thriving. The newly emerging fronds of the Autumn Fern are spectacular orange to copper shades, which mature to a shiny dark green. Likes shade but tolerates a little more sun than many other shade loving ferns. Grows equally as well in containers as it does in garden beds.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 2 feet tall and 2 to 2.5 feet wide, the Autumn Fern is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and in groupings or mass planted as an evergreen groundcover in larger landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Excellent as a solo or combined with other plants in pots, planters and other containers which can be situated on patios, decks, porches and around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to woodland and shade gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens, tropical-look gardens, and around garden ponds.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for groupings or mass plantings; 4 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Autumn Fern is easy to grow and low maintenance. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade or late afternoon and evening sun is fine.
